Pursue Knowledge
Why do they say that "knowledge is power"? Well, the more knowledge
we have the better equipped we are to plan, survive, and enjoy life.
Knowledge is gained through a process of education. Education is much
more than the information received in classrooms. What we learn in a
classroom is only the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of knowledge.
Civic/Political
Democracy allows the people of a country to influence the governing laws that effect their
personal, financial, and religious rights. There are several different forms of democratic
government: Representative, Direct, Socialist, Anarchist, Iroquois, Sortition, and Consensus.
We live in a representative democracy. A representative democracy allows us to "elect
representatives in a free and fair electoral system to make policy for [us] under a wide range
of checks and balances to help ensure leadership accountability"(1).
It's important to appreciate the privilege of living in a country with a democratic
government. Equally important is recognizing that for a representative democracy to be a
true representation of the people, the people must be civic-minded. A civic-minded
individual is aware of current political issues and an active participant in the democratic
process.
